James Hetfield is an American musician. He is a co-founder, lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, main songwriter, and lyricist for the American heavy metal band Metallica.
James is the son of Cynthia Bassett (Nourse) and Virgil Greeley Hetfield. His parents were strict Christian Scientists and disapproved of any medicine or medical treatments. His mother stayed true to her beliefs until her death to cancer.
James’s paternal grandfather was Virgil Hatfield/Hetfield (the son of John Oliver Hatfield and Mary Caroline Hollandsworth).
James’s maternal grandparents were Ralph Carroll Nourse (the son of Charles Wesley Nourse and Lucy Fidelia Sanford) and Alice Adelaide Gleed (the daughter of James A. Gleed and Alice Martha Hill). James’s grandmother Alice was born in London, England.
